Dusty Baker is a year away from almost certainly becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He has a new memoir out called Crossroads, and in it he gets into some things he has not talked much about publicly.

Baker was a four-sport star at Del Campo High. He moved to Carmichael from Riverside in 1965, when he was sixteen. The school was essentially all white at the time. He writes honestly about playing and living through an openly racist era.

One of the more striking parts is about his father. When Baker chose to sign with the Atlanta Braves out of high school instead of accepting a basketball scholarship to Santa Clara, his dad stopped speaking to him. For three years. His father sued to void the contract, lost, but convinced a court to appoint California as trustee over his son's money until he turned twenty-one. The trust tripled in value.

Baker says now he thought his dad was being mean. He was actually being protective. They reconciled, and later his father helped run Dusty's baseball school here in Sacramento for about twenty years. He was involved with Carmichael Little League until he was eighty.

Baker still lives in Granite Bay. His son Darren, a Jesuit High and Cal graduate, is currently an infielder in the White Sox organization. Sacramento, Baker says, is at its heart a baseball town.
