Decoding Nutrition Labels: A Guide to Smarter Grocery Shopping
Navigating the aisles of the grocery store can be overwhelming, especially when trying to make healthy choices. Understanding how to decode nutrition labels is key to making informed decisions about the foods you purchase.

Understanding Serving Sizes: Information listed on the label – including calories, nutrients, and ingredients – is based on a single serving size. Pay attention to both the serving size and the number of servings per container to avoid overeating or underestimating your intake.

Identifying Hidden Sugars: Sugar can hide in many forms on nutrition labels, including under names like high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, or maltose. Check the ingredient list for these sneaky sugars, and be mindful of added sugars in foods like sauces, dressings, and packaged snacks. Opt for foods with lower sugar content or choose alternatives sweetened with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup

Spotting Unhealthy Fats: Similarly, keep an eye out for unhealthy fats, such as trans fats and saturated fats, which can contribute to heart disease and other health issues. Look for foods labeled as "low in saturated fat" or "trans fat-free" and prioritize healthier fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil.

Citrus Peel Hot Cross Buns
We can't have Easter without... the smell of warm spices, the sight of plump little buns, and those deliciously sticky crosses. It's time to make the ultimate Easter treat – orange peel hot cross buns!

Here's what you need:
For the dough:
¾ cup warm whole milk (100°F to 110°F)
2 ¼ teaspoon (1 packet) active dry yeast
½ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg + 1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white)
⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
Zest of 1 large orange
3 ½ - 4 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup finely chopped candied orange peel
½ cup dried currants or golden raisins
For the crosses:
½ cup all-purpose flour
4 - 5 tablespoons water
For the orange glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
How To Make It:
Activate the yeast: In a large bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), combine the warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
Mix the wet ingredients: Add the sugar, egg, egg yolk, melted butter, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and orange zest to the yeast mixture. Whisk until well combined.
Add dry Ingredients (gradually): Gradually add 3 cups of flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Then, stir in the candied orange peel and currants/raisins.
Knead: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface (or use the dough hook on your mixer) for about 8-10 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic. Add more flour as needed to prevent sticking, but aim for a soft, slightly tacky dough.
First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1-1 ½ hours).
Form the buns: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide it into 15-18 equal pieces and shape each into smooth balls. Place the buns on baking sheets lined with parchment paper, spacing them a few inches apart.
Second rise: Cover the buns loosely with plastic wrap and let them rise again in a warm place until doubled in size (about 45-60 minutes).
Preheat the oven: Towards the end of the rise time, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Make the crosses: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and water until you get a thick but pipeable paste. Transfer the paste to a piping bag or a ziplock bag with a small corner cut off.
Pipe the crosses: Pipe a cross onto each bun.
Bake: Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
Prepare the glaze: While the buns are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and lemon juice until smooth.
Glaze the buns: As soon as the buns come out of the oven, brush them with the orange glaze.
Cool and enjoy: Let the buns cool slightly before serving.
Tips:
Fresh spices: For the best flavor, use freshly ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
Room temperature ingredients: Using room temperature eggs and milk helps the dough rise properly.
Don't overbake: Hot cross buns can dry out easily, so be careful not to overbake them.
Variations: Experiment with adding other dried fruits like chopped apricots or cranberries.
