Whip Up Some Sweet Love: Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies for Valentine's Day

These classic heart-shaped sugar cookies are perfect for spreading Valentine's Day cheer. They're simple to make, customizable, and oh-so-yummy! Plus, decorating them with your loved one can be a fun and romantic activity. So, preheat your oven, grab your mixing bowls, and let's bake!
Here's what you need:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Royal icing (optional, for decorating)
Sprinkles, food coloring, candy hearts (optional, for decorating)
Here's how you do it:
Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Use an electric mixer on medium speed for about 3 minutes.
Beat in egg and vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until well combined.
Dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Don't overmix!
Chill the dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This will help the cookies keep their shape when baking.
Preheat oven and prep baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll and cut the cookies: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out your cookies.
Bake: Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
Cool completely: Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
Decorating magic (optional): Time to unleash your creativity! Prepare your royal icing according to the package instructions (or make your own!). Divide the icing into bowls and tint with various food colors if desired. Pipe icing onto the cookies, add sprinkles, candy hearts, or other decorations of your choice. Let the icing dry completely before enjoying.
Tips:
For chewier cookies, reduce the baking time by a minute or two.
Freeze leftover cookie dough for up to 3 months.
Get creative with the icing! Use different colors, piping techniques, and decorations to personalize your cookies.
Most importantly, have fun and enjoy making these sweet treats for your Valentine!
With this recipe and a little love, you'll be baking up heart-shaped happiness in no time. Happy Valentine's Day!
